While stuck in traffic, a woman from Newport Beach looked out of her car window and what she saw a dog in a nearby car doing has left internet users in stitches.
In a viral TikTok video shared in February under the username @qobehbahani, the Chihuahua can be seen sticking its head out the window, enjoying the sunshine coming its way, closing its eyes and soaking up the warmth. “No thoughts,” says the caption.
But the Chihuahua in the clip is not the only dog that appreciates sunbathing. If you’re a dog owner you’ve probably spotted your pet lying under the sun or chasing a sunbeam through the window, and that is actually normal behavior for dogs.
Dr. Lindsay Bisset says in a Pango Vet article that exposure to sunlight helps regulate a dog’s circadian rhythm, and it is also thought to increase the brain’s release of serotonin, a hormone that helps regulate their mood.
Moreover, according to a Vet Explains Pets article by Georgia-based veterinarian Dr. Jess Kirk, lying in the sun also provides them with a sense of comfort and security that helps them relax.
While they do have many reasons to love basking in the sun, too much of it can become detrimental to their health. Sunlight exposes them to UV rays, which can cause sunburn, especially around the nose, ears and eyes. Excessive sun exposure can also cause a dog to develop skin cancer.
Dogs with white coats and unpigmented skin are at a higher risk than others. Too much sun can also expose dogs to the risk of heatstroke. Signs include heavy panting, difficulty breathing, vomiting, weakness, hypersalivation, collapse and seizures.
