Top 6 Dogs You See Around the College of Charleston Campus

Move over, Clyde! You might be the big man on campus, but when it comes to furry friends of the canine variety, there are plenty of contenders for the top dog at the College of Charleston!

We tracked down some of the most familiar furry faces from our favorite outdoor play areas to find out who they are, what they love to do and why they are such good boys (and girls)!

Below are six dogs we love seeing around the College of Charleston campus!

Bean is a friendly and energetic English Labrador retriever who loves playing outside and playing with children. A multipurpose service dog with 300+ hours of public access training, Bean will begin rigorous mobility tasks after his second birthday next month.

“Because he is trained to mitigate my disabilities, he has been a huge help in my academic success, and makes me feel more grounded during times of stress or homesickness,” says Bean’s mom, Laurel Killough. “He is known in the classroom for sighing and snoring on the ground by my feet. I also pass out Bean stickers for everyone that falls in love with him, but can’t interact because he’s on duty.”

After a long day of working, Bean enjoys taking his vest off to play.

“Because campus was his first home,” says Killough, “he truly loves Charleston and campus life.”

Winnie is a toy Australian shepherd who is super high energy and loves everyone, especially her mom, junior Emily Littreal, and their roommate. Winnie loves the Cistern Yard and Rivers Green – and really loved her first snow on campus!

“College has been so much better with a dog,” says Littreal. “I could not live without her!”

London is an American pit bull terrier named after the the song “London Calling” by The Clash. He is an energetic cuddler who demands affection 24/7 and loves hanging out with the brothers of Phi Chi Theta. He also loves playing in the Cistern Yard, walking around the Cougar Mall and trips to the Battery. His dad, senior Riese Salan, says London helps him recuperate from stressful exams and always makes him laugh – like the time he almost fell into the water while trying to play with the turtles in the Stern Center Garden.

Memphis is a mini Australian shepherd who is energetic, playful and smart. He loves walking around Rivers Green or through the Cougar Mall to say hi to people on tours or on their way to class. He loves meeting new people so much that the first time he went to Second Sunday on King Street, he and his dad, sophomore Parker Marinaro, couldn’t get anywhere, because Memphis had to stop and say hi to everyone.

“Having a dog helps a lot after a long day or bad test to know he will be super happy to see me,” says Marinaro.

Willie is a golden retriever and Bowen is a German shorthaired pointer who are both extremely friendly and love being outdoors. They are always eager to play and meet friends. They love the Cistern Yard and the Stern Center Garden, and their favorite place to meet up with friends is Rivers Green outside the Addlestone Library.

“They have lots of aunts on campus and frequent tabling with the MUSC Youth Collaborative, but also love to see SGA members around campus,” says their mom, junior Katie Cole, adding that Bowen and Willie help her during stressful times. “I love how they make others smile!

“My favorite memory with them is their snow day on campus,” Cole continues. “They had a blast!”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
