These dogs were intentionally, basically, you know, ropes, chains tied around their necks and elevated above the ground to make them stop breathing and then hung there for however long they were there for,” Del Toro said.Del Toro said deputies responded to Cruz Perez’s home regarding a disturbance over lawn equipment.When they knocked on the door, he said no one answered, so they went around the back after hearing noises.That’s when Del Toro said they came across Cruz-Perez and found the two dogs, a male and a female, hanging from a tree.”He acknowledged that he did own the dogs, and they must have got tied up themselves. I would say not believing this information and questioning him further, they learned that Mr. Cruz-Perez had tried to get the dogs euthanized a couple of weeks earlier,” Del Toro said.Del Toro said after St. Lucie County Animal Control told Cruz-Perez he would have to pay for a veterinarian to put the dogs down, he chose to hang them.A neighbor we spoke to says she previously called animal control after seeing Cruz-Perez’s treatment of the dogs.”I mean, I think it’s horrible. I tried to call and get the dogs help, and I just think it’s really horrible that the dogs had to endure such misery and pain. I mean, they were hung, and it’s just sick – it’s sickening,” neighbor Kori Freeman said.Cruz-Perez is currently being held in the St. Lucie County jail on a $60,000 bond.
