The city and several downtown businesses have sponsored the installation of dog waste stations around the downtown area and throughout the city’s parks. Seven of the stations have been installed around the perimeter of the downtown area including at least on in each of the city’s municipal parking lots, and five set to be installed throughout the parks. While the specific locations have not been set for the station within the parks City Councilwoman Sara Baer said they are expected to be installed near the parking lots. Two of the stations were sponsored by the city, with the remaining 10 being sponsored by Kast Iron Soda Works, Ricky’s English Pub, A Touch of Gracious Living, Sally Baer, John Lauro in honor of his pets Duke, Callie, and Roxy, State Street Tattoo, Salty Mama’s Snacking Boards LLC, the Salem Country Club, Kate Oesch and the Kreative Ones, Joe and Tricia Hovorka in honor of their mother-in-law, The Rumpled Queen, State Street Records, State Street Salon, and the downtown Salem Partnership. Baer said that the project was inspired by a recent increase in the number of pet owners visiting downtown with their furry friends and was intended to make downtown more inviting for pet owners and help keep the area clean.
