There is no mystery behind the popularity of lap dogs. Compact, impossibly cute, and cuddly, this collection of small dog breeds known for such traits is pretty much universally beloved, with fans including those who live in small spaces and even Martha herself. (Her French Bulldogs could be celebrities in their own right!) While any pup can be a devoted, loyal companion, these small, lovable dogs will stay forever by your side if you let them.
To find out which of these adorable pups are at the peak of popularity, we went straight to the experts at the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
You can imagine the regal Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in storied royal palaces and may have even spotted them in Titian’s paintings. These gentle cuties were bred to be domestic companions, but they also have a sporty side. Unlike many other lap dogs, these spaniels are lively and athletic and revel in the outdoors.
“Their sweet expression and versatile personality make them easy to get along with children and other dogs,” says Brandi H. Munden of the AKC.
Shih Tzu
Trusting in nature, the Shih Tzu was bred to spend most of their day inside royal palaces and as beloved companions. They return this affection with gusto and an eagerness to please and bond.
Because of their size and affectionate disposition, Shih Tzus are happy to spend their time by the side of their human and can happily exist in smaller spaces. “They make great pets for apartment dwellers or owners that lack a big backyard,” shares Munden. It’s important to note, though, that adequate and daily exercise is required for all dogs, no matter their size.
French Bulldog
“Alert, adaptable and a lovable couch potato, the French Bulldog is a consistent favorite among city and small-space dwellers,” says Munden.
As with any breed, close attention should be paid to the particular needs of the French Bulldog. Because of their short-faced nature, Frenchies should always be kept in moderate temperatures, as their breathing can become stressed if they become too hot. Make sure not to over-exercise them or leave them in any overly warm place. These compact pups are happiest in cool temps.

Pugs have been a cherished member of households since ancient China, where they were bred to be companions of Chinese emperors. “Pugs live to be loved by their owners and give love in return,” says Munden. “This mischievous and charming companion is the perfect size for your lap.”
Pugs are content to run and play in the park or sit quietly indoors (as long as you are with them), and will adapt to most lifestyles. Just make sure to keep them cool, as they do have some respiratory challenges and are uncomfortable when overheated.
Bichon Frisé
“These little dogs are sure to make you smile,” says Munden of the Bichon Frisé. Adorable white powder puffs of dogs, “They are full of personality and adaptable companions that are good with children and other dogs.”
While content to snuggle, this low-shedding breed is athletic and agile. Think of them as a big dog’s personality in a small dog’s body.
Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers (or “Yorkies”) are widely loved for their affectionate, confident, and curious demeanor. “The yorkie has plenty of ‘terrier-tude,” says Munden. “Originally bred to be a ratter, they later became the favorite lapdogs of Victorian ladies.”
Consistently ranked as one of America’s most popular dog breeds according to Mundsen, the low-shedding Yorkie is the smallest of the terries and is exceedingly cute. Pint-sized balls of energy, they’ll need to be tired out with a romp in the grass before retiring to the warmth of your lap.
English Toy Spaniel
The English Toy Spaniel is affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please. You may spoil them rotten—but they will spoil you back with endless affection. “This intelligent and gentle breed was bred to be the companion of kings,” shares Munden.
Smaller than the King Charles Spaniel, English Toy Spaniels weigh in at just 14 pounds, possessing a shorter nose and a more compact, studier build than the former. However, both breeds share that same sweet demeanor and similarly flowing coats.
Tibetan Spaniel
Known as “Tibbies” by their devotees, this adorable, cuddly breed is one you may not have heard of. They hail from the Himalayan mountains of Tibet, where the Tibetan Spaniel was first bred by Buddhist monks over 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, they abound in the U.S. and abroad, delighting all with their alert intelligence and friendly demeanor.
“They are a bright, confident, and playful breed and bond well when they are with their humans,” says Munden. Anyone interested in a Tibbie should know that they can be both energetic and sensitive to separation anxiety. Potential pet parents should be prepared to handle and meet their pet’s needs.
Maltese
“Charming and gentle, this breed has long been a favorite as a lap dog,” says Munden. “Maltese are adaptable toy dogs that are most content being with their owners.”
Additionally, they make terrific travel companions, as they weigh just seven pounds. But for all their diminutive size, Maltese are full of vim and vigor and would love to run alongside you in the sunshine or spend afternoons outdoors in your company.
Italian Greyhound
With their noble lineage among aristocrats in Renaissance Italy, the swift yet delicate Italian Greyhound makes for a sweet and affectionate companion. “This playful companion is an elegant couch dog,” says Munden. “They were bred to be companions, can be quite playful, and prefer to be on their owner’s lap rather than anywhere else.”
