YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A York county native who spent over a decade in federal prison for armed bank robbery is determined to rise above his mistakes and inspire others.
Jamael Stubbs, uncovered his passion while serving time and now he’s pursuing his dreams beyond prison walls turning leather into handbags.
“In the federal prison system there’s a leather program. I really focused, and I fell in love with it. I fell in love with the craft,” said Stubbs.
For several years Stubbs said he dedicated countless hours in the leather shop while in prison. Creating his first leather handbag only a month after being accepted into the program.
A craft Stubbs said he learned from a “lifer.”
“And he just encouraged me and gave me the motivation to continue on, so I just kept going until my work improved,” said Stubbs.
Though as time passed the cost of the program got pricey and Stubbs wasn’t sure how he’d continue. However, just when he felt lost Stubbs sister came up with a solution and created a GoFundMe showcasing her brothers handbags.
“I thought that maybe I would get enough to take a couple of classes, but I actually got enough to finish the program,” said Stubbs.
Upon his release in 2023 Stubbs made a commitment to himself and was determined to turn his life around.
“I just wanted to be that example that you can do something different and succeed,” said Stubbs.
Stubb’s told CBS 21 he’s been successful so far. Stubb’s has gone to college, and launched his LLC within nine months of his release and he hopes his story will inspire people in his community. He’s also focused on setting a better example for his children.
“I know hard work pays off, I know persistence pays off, and you know just staying true to myself,” said Stubbs.
