BILLINGS, Mont. – Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter (YVAS) has announced that they will be organizing a day hike event where members of the community can take shelter dogs out for a walk for a day.
The “Hiking Hounds” Volunteer Program will be a regular event taking place once a month on Sundays through the early Fall.
Each month, YVAS will choose a trail head where the group will travel to from YVAS in Billings. YVAS says they’re hoping they can encourage the community to help give the dogs some extra time out of the kennel while having some fun in the great outdoors.
The first upcoming “Hiking Hounds” event will take place on Sunday, June 23, and will cover the trail from East Rosebud to Elk Lake near Roscoe MT.
Participants will meet at YVAS at 8:00 and participants will have a dog loaded into their vehicle before the group departs together for the trailhead. YVAS will provide a crate to volunteers for transport.
Participants should be at least 16 years old. YVAS says that parent/child duos are allowed to take part, but the adult should be in control of the leash at all times during the hike.
Dogs must ride in a crate for transport if a child is in the vehicle and children accompanying an adult must be at least 10 years old.
YVAS suggests that participants should bring trail-appropriate shoes, water for yourself and your canine buddy, as well as snacks or lunch.
YVAS will provide collapsible dishes for dog water, collars and leashes. YVAS says participants may want to bring their own treats or a treat bag.
If you are interested in taking part in the upcoming Hiking Hounds event, you are asked to contact the YVAS volunteer coordinator at rebekah.wong@yvas.org.
