In honor of “National Hot Dog Day” we have a question for you!
With summer in full swing, you can’t help but think of relaxing on a hot summer day, and firing up some dogs on the grill in the backyard, but the question is, does it make a good pizza topping?
Box of Maine, located at 34 Abbott Street in Brewer, is a locally owned and operated business. You can send a Box of Maine made gifts to a friend, family member, or loved one.
On their Facebook page they posted a picture of a pizza with Maine Red Snapper Hot Dogs on it.
As you can imagine, this brought out many respones from people, good and bad.

OMG I am drooling, this looks SO GOOD. Maybe it is because I am hungry, but I can just imagine the flavors, wish I had one right now. I’m not crazy about red sauce anyway, beans sound better
Salted Butter Farm, is a restaurant in Sherman, that creates fresh, locally sourced wholesome feel good food for every appetite. They had the following to say about it:
We do it with homemade mac n cheese AND red hot dogs! With a drizzle…. or not of ketchup
In fact, when I reached out to Salted Butter Farm to inquire, they invited us all the way up to Aroostook Country to try it!
If you are itching to sample one here in the Bangor area, Hero’s serves up “THE MAINAH”, which is cheese pizza topped with red snapper hot dogs.
They earned the name “red snapper” because of the color, and the snap sound it makes when you take a bite. This is not a normal occurrence in other parts of the United States. Add in a top split bun, your condiment of choice, and you have a delicious treat.
You can’t talk about red snapper hot dogs, without mentioning Bangor’s W.A. Bean & Sons, the last makers of this delicacy here in Maine.
