The world’s tallest dog has died just days after being awarded the Guinness World Record for his height.
Kevin, a three-year-old Great Dane from West Des Moines, Iowa, measured 3 feet 2 inches from his feet to his withers and was about 7 feet tall when standing on his hind legs. He passed away this week following an unplanned surgery after falling ill.
Kevin’s owner, Tracy Wolfe, announced his death in a statement to Guinness World Records. The Wolfe family, which includes Tracy and her two children, aged 10 and 12, expressed their devastation. “He was just the best giant boy,” Wolfe said.
“We are so glad that he was able to break the record and have that light on him. He absolutely adored the attention. I wish these giant breeds, and all dogs, could live longer than they do. It’s never enough time.”
Kevin’s record-breaking achievement was announced earlier this month. His impressive stature made him a local celebrity, and he quickly became a favorite among dog lovers around the world. The average Great Dane measures around 2 feet 6 inches to the withers, the name for the ridge between the shoulder blades on a horse or dog.
Kevin was still a bit shorter than the tallest dog ever recorded, another Great Dane named Zeus, who measured 3 feet 8 inches and died in 2014 at age five.
Despite his imposing size, Kevin, named after Macaulay Culkin’s character from “Home Alone,” was known for his gentle and friendly nature. The Wolfe family said he liked to lay on the couch, and his fear of the vacuum cleaner endeared him to many.
Tracy, who works at a veterinary clinic, told Guiness that Kevin was a “big baby” who acted like he had no idea how big he was.
“I don’t think he’s aware he is as big as he is. He’s continuously trying to squeeze into small beds and sit on top of us, and do everything that the smaller dogs do,” she said when the record was announced.
The Great Dane was also a very good friend to the three other dogs, including a pug, and four cats he lived with.
A spokesperson for Guinness World Records expressed condolences: “We are deeply saddened to learn that Kevin suddenly passed away after unexpected health complications. Tracy and the team at the vet clinic she works in did everything they could to save Kevin after he became ill. Our thoughts and support are with the Wolfe family as they navigate this difficult time.”
