A woman frantic over her missing dog was given the best possible ending when her beloved pet returned to her.
She then had to make the long trek around the neighborhood, with her dog by her side, to take down all the hastily put-together missing flyers.
In a TikTok video that has had over 128,000 views since being shared on May 29, Perla Vanessa (@perkz.v) walks Leia on the leash down the streets of her neighborhood, where missing posters of the pup are plastered to poles.
She wrote on the video: “POV: Taking Leia with me to take down all her missing flyers after the entire block seen me with red puffy eyes from crying all day and night.”
Leia herself seems totally unbothered and unaware of the terror her owner went through. She skips and sniffs her way along the sidewalk while her owner slowly fills a plastic bag with crumpled-up missing flyers.
The grateful pet owner revealed in a comment that the flyers themselves had helped reunite Perla and Leia.
Perla explained that the dog, who was not wearing a collar, was picked up by a neighbor. The neighbor had no way of knowing who she belonged to until they noticed the flyers, “and probably me hysterically crying up and down the block.”
In a video update, she said Leia had gone missing on Saturday night, but they only noticed on Sunday as Leia is the “responsible one out of all our dogs” and they usually never have to worry about her.
“In the 10 years I’ve had her, this has never happened before,” she said in the video. “By Sunday afternoon, I was bawling my eyes out, running up and down the block, hysterical, putting up posters, going from neighbor to neighbor.”
And they “all” saw her, Perla said, with some neighbors even having photos and videos of them cuddling the little lost dog, who they had not realized was actually lost.
Admitting she didn’t sleep at all on Sunday night from the fear, she added that Leia is microchipped, but she couldn’t be sure that whoever found her would take her to be checked or just give her to the pound or even keep her themselves.
“Monday afternoon, I was hysterical. I was bawling my eyes out. I literally got my family worried,” Perla said.
“Thankfully, because of the posters I put up, some neighbors down the block were able to call me and tell me that they had had her since Sunday night. They didn’t know who to call, they were about to call the shelter.”
The relieved dog owner added that Leia would “never leave my side ever again.”
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), around 3.1 million dogs end up in shelters each year, a huge number but a notable reduction from 3.9 million dogs in 2011.
And in further positive news, each year, around 710,000 stray dogs who enter shelters across the U.S. as strays are returned to their owners.
The comments on the original video were gleeful at the happy ending to the story, with one admitting, “My world would have been in shambles if I lost my dog.”
“Glad you found her,” another said. Perla replied, “Thank you. I was a MESS lol.”
Incredibly, one moment was from someone in the neighborhood who wrote, “My family were helping looking for your puppy!”
Perla replied: “Omg stop you have no idea how much it means to me, thank you guys for the support.”
And one person joked: “The walk of shame with the culprit.”
