A woman’s attempt to cuddle her “independent” Australian cattle dog, Arya, took a strange turn when the pup reacted in a way she wasn’t expecting.
In the viral video, shared on TikTok in July, under the username @arya_the_cattle_dog, Arya can be seen sitting on the couch next to her owner, minding her own business, when the latter tries to initiate cuddles. As soon as the poster touches Arya, the dog immediately takes back her paw, and then looks at her in the eyes, as if asking her to never do that again.
“Me trying to initiate cuddling with my independent dog,” reads a caption shared with the hilarious clip.
Pet MD experts say that some dogs are naturally less inclined to cuddle due to their genetics and individual personalities. They add that a pup’s inclination to cuddle is not necessarily indicative of their affection or happiness.
Pet MD experts say that it is crucial for owners to recognize and respect a dog’s boundaries, as each pup has its unique way of showing love.
Understanding and respecting a dog’s personal space is vital for a healthy and happy relationship. While some canines may never become enthusiastic cuddlers, there are other ways to bond and show affection. Engaging in activities such as playing, training, and simply spending time together can be equally fulfilling for both the dog and the owner.
The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.1 million views and more than 72,800 likes on the platform.
One user, Jennifer Lea, commented: “Your dog saying “Ma’am, why we keep doing this? At this point you’re hurting your own feelings.”
Melissa_mancillas posted: “My dog is like this too lol [laugh out loud]. He likes to be near you but do not try to cuddle.”
Milk.was.a.bad.choice wrote: “Total heeler behavior. Mine will come over when she wants attention, and after a minute just walk off and do her own thing.”
Camila Beltran added: “Mines like this but you must stay in the room. So he wants company but from a distance.”
Another user, Border collie mom, commented: “I have one like that too and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt my feelings a little bit every time.”
