A dog owner from Oakland, California, shared a video of what her pup was like back at the shelter before adoption, and what her pet is like now that she is safe with her, and internet users can’t believe how much she has changed.
The viral TikTok post, shared in July by @illegalxalien93, features a clip of the female pit bull looking miserable at the shelter, confined to a small kennel with no space to move around. The next clip shows her living her best life with her new mom, running free at the park, and at the beach, with her tail always waving.
“My dog when I met her at the shelter vs my dog now,” reads layover text in the clip, and a caption adds: “I’ve been so lucky to find my soul dog all over again.”
A study by the Arizona State University published in PLOS ONE, found that dogs labeled as pit bulls in shelter have three times less chance of getting adopted than other canines, because of their reputation of being aggressive.
The study also found that, when labels where removed from the dogs at the shelter, the result was a higher number of pups getting adopted, adding that breed labeling may be inadvertently penalizing those canines.
Georgia-based veterinarian, Jess Kirk, says in an article published by VetExplainsPets, that, despite their reputation, pit bulls are not inherently aggressive, and as with any other dog, their behavior is often the result of their upbringing and environment.
Like most other dog breeds, pit bulls are also intelligent and eager to please their owners, so an effective training method for them is positive reinforcement. They will also need regular exercise and play time as highly energetic dogs.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 528,800 views and more than 91,400 likes on the platform. Most viewers praised the poster for adopting the pup and giving her a brand-new life.
Pet adoption has never been more important. Over 6.3 million pets enter our overcrowded shelters nationwide every year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and of those, about 920,000 are euthanized each single year for lack of space in the facilities.
