Woman reveals letting crate trained dog sleep in her bed was “best thing”

Owners often wrestle with the idea about whether or not it is best to keep their pets in their beds with them overnight, but one dog owner has brought TikTok users together over her decision to let her crate-trained canine sleep next to her.

The woman, who goes by @veryawkwarddog on TikTok, had shared a video of herself cuddling her dog, Reuben, to the social media platform on September 4. The clip, which has been viewed more than 24,000 times so far, detailed how the pup’s owner finds ditching her dog’s crate to be the “best thing” she ever did.

“Sorry to all dog trainers but the best thing I ever did was finally caving and letting my crate trained dog sleep in my bed,” @veryawkwarddog wrote in an overlaid text on the video.

TikTok users were able to see the young woman laying down in her bed, with a cuddly toy and Reuben in her arms. She had shared in the comments section that her dog had slept in a crate for the first four years of his life, but that she soon changed her stance on his bedtime routine after wanting him to experience the comfort of sleeping with his owner.

The post’s caption reads: “Life’s too short not to be cuddling your dog every two minutes.”

Newsweek reached out to @veryawkwarddog for more information via email.

Although dog owners have different approaches to bedtime, veterinarian at online pet-product retailer Chewy, Laurie Hess, says that letting your dog sleep in the same bed as you could lead to a calmer and happier canine overall.

“A pup that shares a bed with its owner may be more behaviorally at ease with being touched than other dogs since they are used to daily physical touch and being in close proximity to humans,” Hess told Newsweek. “Permitting your dog to sleep in your bed not only affects their physical health and behavior, but can also benefit their mental health by helping to reduce their stress levels.

The veterinarian says that keeping your pet close at night does, contrary to popular belief, more to help them feel relaxed and safe than it does to making them susceptible to separation anxiety and other attachment issues.

TikTok Users React

Several TikTok users online have shared that they agree with Hess and Reuben’s owner in the comments section.

“My dogs are crate trained,” one user wrote. “Always crated if unsupervised. But they all sleep in bed with me every night. Balance is key.”

Another added: “My dog sleeps in my bed until she falls asleep, then sleeps in her crate all night until around six when she comes in my bed for a cuddle, if it works for you there’s no harm, and pup cuddles are the best.”

A third posted: “I stand on the fact that there needs to be a bond before you do intense training, sleeping in bed, cuddling, playing helps so much.”
