A woman preparing for an international trip got a nasty surprise when she discovered that her 1-year-old dog had completely destroyed her passport.
Roderick, a duck tolling retriever and golden retriever mix, managed to get hold of the important document and got to work shredding it up—leaving his owner in a panic.
Laura, who lives in the Netherlands, told Newsweek about the moment with a mix of frustration and humor. “I was just packing some of the things I needed for my trip, including my passport, and was thinking to myself I should not leave it on the table as he has a habit of destroying letters or other paper things,” she said.

“I got disturbed by something, I think the doorbell rang, and when I got back, he was looking very proud of his achievement,” Laura added.

Roderick the dog looks very apologetic with his owner’s destroyed passport. Laura, his owner, told Newsweek she had thought of putting the important document out of harm’s way.

In a picture that she shared on Reddit‘s r/WellThatSucks subreddit two days ago as u/LauraEatsFalafel, Laura—who didn’t give her surname—captured Roderick’s face alongside the ripped passport. It happened just hours before she was set to go to Malaysia.
But Laura couldn’t stay mad at her pup for long. “When I got a bit angry at him, he looked so sorry, I couldn’t stay mad for more than a few minutes,” she said. “It is ruined. They are very strict with legal documentation so even a small tear could be a reason to decline it. So I immediately knew I was in trouble.”
Laura quickly took action, contacting authorities to request a rush appointment for a new passport. But, with all slots booked, she was forced to seek an emergency passport from the border control. Unfortunately, Malaysia does not accept these emergency documents, escalating Laura’s stress.
Thankfully, when she went back to the authorities again, they were able to help: “I got squeezed between some appointments and I got to retrieve my new passport yesterday. My plane is leaving today in a few hours,” Laura said.
The story gained attention on Reddit where people sympathized with her dilemma.
“I didn’t expect it to blow up like that. A lot of the comments are very funny and gave me a laugh, and I am happy to have put a smile on people’s faces with my misery,” Laura said.
She also responded to comments suggesting that it was her fault for leaving the passport lying around. “Mistakes happen people, it just takes 10 seconds of looking the other way for something like this to happen,” Laura said. “Don’t immediately assume I am that stupid to leave my valuables all around the house.”
As she prepares for her flight later today, Laura is pleased she managed to get a new passport sorted, and doesn’t hold any bad feelings toward her beloved but mischievous pup.
