Woman orders pool for dog to enjoy this summer—but there’s just one problem

When dog owner Shona Callinan ordered a summer-time treat for her dog, she was hoping it would be the perfect solution to the hot weather—but when the dog pool arrived, it was clear there was a problem.

The 24-year-old from Ireland ordered her dog Junior, known as Junie, a pool to cool off in the hot weather, but when it arrived, it was much smaller than expected.

In a video on TikTok with over 170,000 views, 13-year-old rough collie Junie is standing politely in the pool, barely large enough to fit his paws.

The text overlay said: “POV: You ruined your dog’s summer by ordering the wrong size swimming pool.”

“I ordered the pool two weeks ago,” Callinan told Newsweek. “I was on vacation when it was delivered and I got a text to say it was delivered by the postman. I asked my dad was it delivered all week and he said no—there was no swimming pool.”

“Just so happens it was delivered folded up in a tiny envelope, and he didn’t expect it to be the pool. It was meant to be big enough to fit a Labrador but I didn’t read the size measurements and bought the tiny pool by looking at the picture,” she said.

Despite the sizing snafu, Junie remained calm and composed in his “hamster-sized” spa day moment. “Junior hasn’t a clue what’s going on and he’s such a quiet little character who just stands patiently every time I put a camera in his face,” Callinan said. “He’s getting older now so to see him go viral in his older age is great fun.”

The moment was originally shared at the suggestion of Callinan’s friend and coworker Emily before it gained viral attention. “She thought it was funny, and then it just blew up,” Callinan said. “We were surprised to see the video doing so well but it’s not unusual that I would buy useless things like that.”

People fell in love with the video online, and headed to the comments to share their reaction.

“Omg it’s a hamster pool,” said @franlouiseweber. While viewer @beth joked: “That wouldn’t even fit his dinner.”

“He’s ready for a great pedicure. Now please order him a sauna. Thanks,” joked ellie_papaggelou.

Small Pool Safety for Dogs

Paddling pools are a great way to keep dogs cool during the summer months, water can help dogs to regulate their body temperature, while a pool can also provide physical and mental stimulation—particularly in months where it may not be safe to walk your dog during the day.

Despite the positives of small pools for dogs, there are warnings too as stories of animals dying after consuming too much water too quickly from a small pool. In 2022, 18-month-old border collie Winter died from water intoxication after playing in around four inches of water, while in 2023, 4-month-old St. Bernard puppy Moose died of pneumonia after he drank his water too fast and had to be rushed to urgent care.

Winter’s owner Jessie recalled: “He was panting and wanted to go back inside so in we went. After a few steps into the house, Winter threw up a massive amount of water and I immediately knew something was wrong. He walked a few more steps and collapsed and starting shaking, drooling, and whining.” Sadly just 20 minutes later, Winter was dead, prompting the owner to share her story and raise awareness for other pet owners.
