
ALTAVISTA, Va. (WDBJ) – A woman was injured after being attacked by a dog Friday, April 18, according to Altavista Police Department.
Campbell County Public Safety received a 911 call reporting a woman screaming in the Toddsbury Road area of Altavista. Altavista Police Department officers were immediately dispatched to the location.
While en route, additional 911 calls reported a woman being attacked by a dog, according to police. Police arrived on the scene to find an active dog attack in progress on the 1600 block of Toddsbury Road. A woman was being attacked by a male pit bull, according to police.
Police say they first attempted less-lethal means to stop by attack, but were not successful. To protect the woman’s life, officers were forced to use lethal force to stop the attack, according to police.
Preliminary information provided by the woman indicates that the pit bull had chased her own dog into her residence, where the attack began, according to police.
The woman, who sustained substantial injuries from the attack, was transported by Campbell County Public Safety to a local emergency medical facility for treatment.
Campbell County Animal Control responded to the scene and took possession of the dog for rabies testing.
