Woman gives doomed shelter dog a joyful weekend escape

A high-risk shelter dog on the brink of euthanasia got a rare taste of freedom and comfort over the weekend, thanks to a woman who brought him home for a sleepover that has since gone viral on TikTok.

The short clip, shared on June 16 by the woman under @chaosinmycrocs29, shows the dog—named Crong—jumping excitedly in his kennel before the scene cuts to him curled up on a bed, playing with toys and resting his head on a woman’s chest, his eyes soft and peaceful. The post has garnered more than 679,000 views and 178,000 likes, as viewers on TikTok responded with a flood of emotional comments and appeals to adopt him.

“Giving Crong a weekend away is a sliver of what he deserves,” the woman said in the caption. “Please consider adopting this special boy!!!”

She told viewers on TikTok that Crong is a 3-year-old, 60-pound male pit bull mix at Aurora Animal Care [and] Control, in Aurora, Illinois. Like many large dogs in overcrowded shelters, he has been deemed at high risk for euthanasia.

An overlaid text on the video read: “POV: [Point of view] You give the high risk euthanasia dog at the shelter a sleepover.”

The video struck a nerve online, showing Crong not as a statistic, but as a dog capable of joy, affection and companionship. The footage showed Crong playing with stuffed animals, exploring a family home, and burrowing under covers. At one point, he is seen lying in bed beside the woman, resting his head on her arm in the dark. It is a moment that resonated deeply with viewers.

“Please tell me someone showed up for him,” one viewer said, while another added: “I hope he finds his forever home.”

“This is [kind of] sad to take him back,” a third viewer shared.

Though the woman who posted the video has not been publicly identified, her appeal for Crong’s adoption was heard loud and clear.

According to the information shared in the video, Crong’s behavior with other dogs is listed as “maybe,” and his compatibility with cats is “unsure.” But his brief weekend escape from shelter life suggests he is adaptable, affectionate, and craving connection.

It looks as though the short clip has worked in prompting people to express a serious interest in rehoming him.

“An update for everyone invested, my roommate and I are going to try and meet him tomorrow and if he gets along with her dog we would be prepared to have him living with us by the end of the week,” one viewer said. “He would be getting SOOOOOO much love and all of the toys (and human aunts and uncles) he could ever want!!!”

“Get him to me and I’ll take him no hesitation,” another viewer added.
