Woman fosters rescue dog’s mom in the hopes of finding her forever home

Three years after adopting a dog, this owner has opened up her home once again to a senior pooch—who happens to be her rescue pet’s mom.

Lori Muldoon rescued her dog, named Pancho, in November 2021 from an animal rescue sanctuary in northern Morocco. He’s a former street dog who was discovered alongside his mom, and two siblings, Alfie and Tara.

Muldoon, 29, from the U.K., told Newsweek that Pancho is “extremely laid back” and loves nothing more than snoozing in the sun. Since finding his forever home, he has also learned to enjoy going on hikes and beach trips, with his owner adding that he’s “a proper softy at heart.”

While Pancho, 4, managed to find his happily ever after, the same couldn’t be said for his biological family. His siblings and mom, who was nicknamed Mother Teresa because she regularly nursed the stray puppies at the refuge, were still without a loving home.

Muldoon simply couldn’t wait hopelessly for them to finally be chosen, so she took another trip to Morocco to meet the dogs herself at Beldi Dog Rescue (@beldi.rescue on Instagram).

She said: “It was amazing visiting the refuge and meeting his mum and siblings. They were super friendly and acted like they could smell Pancho on us, as they took an instant liking to me and my boyfriend.”

While Teresa was “very timid but curious,” she’s an older dog (thought to be around 6 years old), and is considered less desirable as a result. So, Muldoon took matters into her own hands and arranged to have the senior dog flown to the U.K. so she could foster her and reunite her with Pancho after all these years.

The pup had to go through an eight-hour drive, followed by a three-hour flight, and then across the Euro Tunnel. Eventually, she was collected by Muldoon on January 11, ready to start her new life.

“We felt it was the least we could do to help. Being slightly older, she wasn’t as desirable as the other dogs there, so we feel this is her only chance to find a forever loving home,” Muldoon told Newsweek.

She continued: “The moment Pancho and Teresa met was super sweet and surreal. Pancho was so excited, and I think he may have recognized her scent within the first few hours. Whereas Theresa may have taken a little more time, given that she’d been through a lot in the past couple of days.”

Thankfully, the two dogs grew comfortable around each other very quickly, and Pancho certainly helped his mom settle into her foster home.

Pancho tends to be “a little grumpy” when other dogs come into his home. However, he hasn’t shown any negativity towards his mom since she arrived. “That’s what makes me believe he remembers her,” Muldoon said.

Indeed, Teresa is coming out of her shell much more and showing more of her personality.

While keeping Teresa forever isn’t part of their plan, Muldoon hopes to find her the perfect home. She thinks it would be a calm household, potentially with another dog who isn’t too energetic.

“She warms to females a lot quicker than males, so a female household would be amazing as she’s a girl’s girl,” Muldoon said. “A calm dog companion would also be amazing for her. She’s spent a lot of her life with dogs, so I think that helps her cope in certain situations.

She continued: “We are willing to wait as long as it takes to find her the perfect home. We feel we are doing an amazing thing by giving her this opportunity, and the right home is out there for her (hopefully somewhere not too far so we can still meet up).”

Muldoon has been documenting her decision to foster Teresa and sharing clips of the two pups together on TikTok (@loriandpancho). Social media users have praised her for reuniting the mother-son duo, leading to more than 24,400 views and 1,800 likes on one video.

The online reaction has been incredibly positive, and Muldoon has continued sharing videos of the two dogs together. She’s been inundated with support, as many who have experience with fostering animals have even shared their insightful advice, which she’s grateful for.

Among the numerous comments on her TikTok clip, one user wrote: “oh this is amazing. Can’t wait for the updates.”

Another person added: “This is the loveliest story, how lucky they both are.”

While another comment reads: “There’s a special place in the next life for you.”
