A video about a woman in Canada who traveled to California to save two elderly dogs from euthanasia has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was shared by @tashaleelyn, who is based in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, according to a later video shared by the poster. The video, which has amassed over 995,000 views since it was shared on November 8, was captured in Orange County, according to a location shared with the post.
A woman is shown sitting in a car as she says in the clip, “Currently there are two 12-year-old dogs on a euthanasia list at a kill shelter in California. Let’s go save them.”
According to a screenshot of what appears to be the dogs’ profiles on the shelter’s website, both stray pups are described as “medical senior dogs”. One of them is a pit bull, while the other is a German shepherd.
The woman later arrives at the OC Animal Care shelter to collect the two canines, who are shown to be on leashes inside the facility.
“Hi. Oh gosh, you’re so little,” the woman says as she caresses the German shepherd. “Hi, little babies,” she says as the dogs’ handlers pass their leashes to the woman.
“They just handed them to me and that was it,” she says, later adding, “Guys, you’re gonna go to the best home ever.”
“Best home ever with Mom, because I’m Mom,” the woman says, with the pups walking in front of her as the clip ends.
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
Each year, around 6.3 million companion animals enter shelters in the United States, including 3.1 million dogs, according to 2019 data compiled by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Around 65 percent of the dogs that enter shelters are adopted and 13 percent are euthanized, the data shows.
The ASPCA says: “While it can’t be said that the ASPCA is ‘for’ euthanasia, it recognizes the inevitable necessity for euthanasia in certain circumstances.”
There are more pets than there are appropriate homes in many parts of the country, the nonprofit explains, adding that long-term housing of pets in cages without access to exercise or social activities is “not an acceptable alternative.”
The ASPCA believes that “unwanted pets deserve a dignified, painless death, rather than suffer from such cruelties as malnutrition, disease or trauma, outcomes commonly associated with an unwanted and/or uncared-for existence.
“Euthanasia must be understood for what it is: a last-step, end-of-the-road option to spare animals further hardship and suffering,” the ASPCA says.
‘Luckiest Day of Their Lives’
Viewers on TikTok were moved by the woman’s effort to save the senior dogs.
“You flew to California from Nova Scotia to save these babies just wow I’m crying,” noted olive88828. The original poster wrote, “They were so worth it.”
Diana Parry465 wrote, “I’m crying watching this. Luckiest day of their lives. Love from Ontario Canada.”
Erica | SAHM noted, “‘Cause I’m Mom.’ The introduction. I love this so much.”
Choices matter said, “You are an INCREDIBLE human being.”
