Woman finally captures how wolf dog keeps escaping: “so smart”

A dog owner from Switzerland couldn’t figure out how her wolf dog kept getting out of the house all by herself, until she caught her on video, and it finally made sense.

The hilarious video, shared on TikTok in September, under the username @gaia.lucy, shows the wolf dog standing on her hind legs and opening the glass door with her paws, turning the handle down and then walking right out.

Dogs are among the most-clever animals and can learn all sorts of tricks and commands. They have an average intelligence similar to that of a human toddler, and can understand between 100 and 200 words. But that’s not all; as Fetch by WebMD reports, they are also capable of problem-solving, and some can even learn to count and do simple arithmetic.

“I finally got it on video! My wolf-dog kept escaping the house… First I thought my parents let her out. But she is not allowed outside without supervision. But she is so smart! She can open any kind of door,” reads layover text in the clip.

A caption shared with the post adds: “You can hear me in the background whispering … That I hate it that she is so smart! ma’am opens everything … The reason I [have] to lock my door at home is [because] she knows how to open them …”

While their ability to open doors shows a clever dogs can be, it can also put them in danger, especially if you live in a busy area, near cars and other vehicles. In this case, you will have to make sure your front door is fully shut at all times.

One solution, as suggested by dog behavior expert KB Williams in an article published by Dog How To, is to install childproof door knobs covers or lever locks that make it harder for your canine to turn the knob. You can also place door stoppers on the inside to stop your pup from pushing it open.

It is also important that you train your dog to stay away from the door by teaching them the command “leave it,” like you would for other objects. You can do so with positive reinforcement, praising their success with tasty treats.

And, last but not least, Williams says you should provide your dog with enough mental stimulation and physical exercise that they won’t feel the need to explore the world on their own.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 308,000 views and more than 18,000 likes on the platform.

One user, Adventures in Shiba, commented: “Our Shibas did this with our gates and were getting out of the yard. We made a new, taller gate so they couldn’t reach the latch … So they trained the cat to open it.”

Madebynl posted: “When I adopted my doggo he gave me a big surprise … I have to lock everything child lock the stove and kid proof the kitchen cabinets I’ve named him BANDITTO.”

Kaia00000 added: “My husky mix is an escape artist. No door can hold her down, she even managed to open her crate.”
