Woman describes life with “Velcro dog”—hysterics at his demonstration

A woman’s attempt to film a social media video at home was instantly thwarted by her clingy canine, who wasted no time proving why some dogs are affectionately known as “Velcro dogs.”

The candid moment, which the woman captured and shared to TikTok on February 13, has resonated with thousands of pet owners online, drawing 3.5 million views and more than 671,000 likes to date.

Viewers were able to see the Florida-based pet owner, who is known as @travelingwithnaa06sitting on the platform, sitting down on her couch and looking into her phone’s camera lens, ready to record content. Before she could even begin speaking, her dog immediately climbed onto her chest, pressing his body against hers. The woman quickly began laughing at her pet’s unwavering need to be close.

“He’s right there, having a Velcro dog be like that,” she told viewers on TikTok.

An overlaid text on the video humorously confirmed the struggle: “He didn’t even let me finish speak.”

The term “Velcro dog” is used to describe dogs that tend to stay close—sometimes uncomfortably so—to their owners at all times.

“Like people, dogs have many different personality traits, but some dog breeds are more known for showing and receiving affection than others,” Catrin George, an animal wellbeing expert at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, told Newsweek. “Whilst every dog is different, research has shown that they do love their owners and they will show this in their own ways.

“Signs to look out for include wagging their tails, leaning into you, nudging you with their noses, or even sitting near or sometimes, on you.”

George said that certain breeds have earned the ‘Velcro dog’ label more so than others due to their strong desire to be physically close to their owners. These include Labradors and golden retrievers, two of the most loyal and affectionate family dogs.

Boxers, known for their protective nature, also tend to shadow their owners, as do beagles and dachshunds, which were originally bred for pack hunting and naturally seek companionship and the company of others.

The TikTok post quickly drew reactions from dog lovers worldwide who were left in hysterics over the familiar scene. Many viewers shared similar experiences with their own overly attached pets.

“I want a Velcro dog,” one viewer said. “I always get the stuck up, bougie, I need my personal space dogs.”

“I love Velcro dogs,” another added. “They’re just so in love with us.”

“It’s like you activated the magnet,” a third viewer said.

Another commented: “It’s all fun and games until you wanna [want to] leave the house for 5.5 minutes.”

“My Velcro dog just so happened to be my 150 pound English mastiff,” another said. “It hurts when he flops.”

“The way he looks at you,” another added.

While the woman’s video was likely meant to be about something else entirely, the dog’s spontaneous display of loyalty and affection stole the show.
