Woman can’t believe what day care sends dog home with: “Best thing ever”

A woman flipping through a unique item she received from her dog’s day care facility quickly went viral, with people sharing their jealousy of the precious keepsake.

Koby Miata, a 4-year-old pit bull mix, proudly attends a Long Island, New York, doggy day care called Hounds Town Commack Rd. For the past five years, this day care has taken “school” photos of each dog, but in September, one of the owners, Holly Farrelly, thought to turn it up a notch.

Farrelly told Newsweek she gathered inspiration from her children’s yearbooks, as she cherishes these snapshots of their year and looks through them hundreds of times. After seeing the yearbook was made through Shutterfly, she decided to attempt creating one for the doggy day care. She wanted to make it special, since not everyone has children or can have kids.

“[Dogs] are people’s kids now,” she said.

Although Koby’s owner, Jess, is a parent of two children, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to receive a yearbook featuring her fur baby, especially since the family rescued him. It shows how far he’s come after being found with his littermates in a box on the side of the road in South Carolina.

Jess told Newsweek she preordered the yearbook, but much to her surprise, she received it for free. Stunned by how well the first-edition yearbook turned out, she showed it off in a March 27 TikTok posted to her account, @jessmiata. She flipped through the pages, showing Koby’s official school picture, photos of events throughout the year and messages from families.

“It’s the best thing ever!” Jess said. “Just a quick browse can turn your whole day around.”

Farrelly said making the yearbook took “a lot of trial and error.” But now that she’s finished one, she’ll be able to do it more efficiently next year, which she already committed to making, since new dogs join the day care.

“I saw how much it meant to people,” she said.

Her yearbook idea, with the help of the TikTok, sparked interest from others who send their dogs to a Hound Town USA facility. Farrelly said the Pittsburgh branch told her it received five requests from owners, and they loved the idea.

Farrelly then passed along the process of how to make one. It starts in September, when she spends three full days taking pictures of the dogs. Then, with endless messaging and use of Google Drive, owners send in the dog’s baby photos and special messages to their fur baby. She gathered pictures from events and field trips throughout the year. The end of the yearbook features a rainbow bridge crossing page that honors the pets who passed that year.

Within a week, the TikTok video amassed over 1 million views, 160,600 likes and 2,786 comments. Jealousy quickly brewed in the comment section of this special yearbook.

“My poor dog is homeschooled so won’t have this experience,” commented a viewer.

A second person joked: “My dog is homeschooled and we didn’t do pics this year. But she is the Valedictorian and we are so proud, but for real this is adorable.”

Another added: “Am sorry but that’s beyond cute. I work in a dog daycare and I will definitely mention this to them.”
