CARMICHAEL, Calif. (WKRC) – A woman was arrested for animal cruelty after authorities discovered a dog with a lacerated throat in a trash can at an apartment complex, according toSacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the scene just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, after a caller reported finding the injured dog with something tied around its neck. The dog was still alive when deputies arrived and was immediately taken for medical treatment by Sacramento County Animal Control.
Witnesses identified the dog’s owner as 41-year-old Danielle Killian, who lived alone in the complex with two dogs and a cat. Deputies found Killian at her apartment, where she admitted to cutting the dog’s throat on Monday because she believed her life would be easier with only one dog, detectives said.
Killian reportedly placed the injured dog in a shopping bag and disposed of it in a garbage bin on Tuesday. A search of her apartment led to the discovery of a knife believed to have been used in the incident.
The 41-year-old was arrested and taken to the Sacramento County Main Jail. She was released on her own recognizance by the courts and has since been released from custody.
Detectives have been unable to locate the cat and were concerned that other animals in Killian’s care may have suffered abuse, as she reportedly moved frequently, sometimes as often as once a year.
