PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A Southern Colorado woman was arrested after her elderly mother’s death was attributed to a dog attack, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies reportedly responded to a home in the 4800 block of Jefferson Boulevard on Feb. 3 on a report of an unconscious woman.
When they arrived, deputies reportedly found 76-year-old LaVonne Hoff dead at the scene and several dogs running loose in the home. Deputies also found two dozen more dogs and seven birds in cages.
Autopsy results later attributed the victim’s death to a dog attack, deputies said.
According to deputies, the victim had dementia and required 24-hour care.
Detectives learned that 47-year-old Jessica Hoff had left her mother at home alone with her dogs that day while she ran errands in Pueblo, and the dogs attacked the victim.
A search warrant was issued on the second property the suspect had in Colorado City and deputies reportedly found a total of 54 dogs and seven birds.
Deputies said the animals were living in unsanitary conditions and several of the dogs were in poor health.
Deputies reportedly worked with Animal Law Enforcement to seize the dogs and the birds.
Hoff was arrested on a warrant for criminal negligence resulting in death of an at-risk adult and 54 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, according to deputies.
