HONEA PATH, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – On Sunday, the Honea Path Police Department announced they arrested a woman after nearly 30 dogs were found living in “horrific conditions.”
Police say several of the dogs were confined in small enclosures, one was dead, and several others–two of them puppies–were roaming the property and the roadways surrounding it.
This prompted an animal cruelty investigation that lasted late into the night, police say.
With the help of Anderson Co. deputies and PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society, 13 dogs were seized overnight.
Police say that many dogs still remained on the property, unable to be captured.
“Efforts to locate and provide care for these additional canines will continue throughout the week,” Honea Path Police Chief Miller said.
Police say investigators collected evidence from the scene which resulted in the arrest of Betty Ordonez of Greenville, SC.
She is charged with the following:
14 counts of Ill-Treatment of Animals
14 counts of Failure to Comply with DHEC Regulation on Vaccination of Domestic Animals
1 count of Failure to Bury a Deceased Animal
7 counts of Dogs Running at Large
Ordonez is currently being held at the Anderson Co. Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
“The conditions these dogs were living in are deplorable, and I must thank everyone for this joint effort to bring an outstanding resolution for these animals,” Miller added.
