HAUGHTON, La. (KSLA) – A woman in Haughton is in custody after 13 dogs were rescued from “appalling” conditions.
The Haughton Police Department says on May 23, officers were called out to a house in the 400 block of Union Texas Road to do a welfare check. When officers got there, they noticed a “horrendous” smell and say they could see through the window dogs in cages stacked on top of each other.

After the person at the home wouldn’t let officers inside, they got a search warrant. They rescued 13 dogs that were living in “appalling” conditions.
CRIME IN THE ARKLATEX
The Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office was called in to help with the dogs.
The woman at the home, Michele Massara, was arrested and charged with 13 counts of animal cruelty. She’s being held on a $460,000 bond at Bossier Max.

As of May 27, Haughton police officials say the dogs are seeing a vet and are headed to LAMA Animal Rescue for care.

Anyone interested in helping the dogs can make donations to the Haughton Police Department. They’re asking for Purina One dog food, cleaning supplies, bleach, towels, detergent, or money. All donations can be dropped off at the police department.
Police are still looking into the case.
