A woman and her dogs were rescued by Florence police officers Thursday after she fell through ice on a frozen lake.
The woman was trying to get her dogs off of the ice atop the lake in The Village at South Fork Creek neighborhood, off Rio Grande Circle, according to a department news release.
Around 6:39 p.m., officers were called after someone reported the woman, whose identity has not been released, had fallen through the ice and into the lake. Florence police officers and Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputies found her about 100 feet from the shore when they arrived, the release says.
Authorities crawled out onto the frozen lake and successfully pulled her and her dogs out of the water. They believe she was in the water for about 10 minutes before being rescued.
The woman was transported to the University of Cincinnati Hospital in Ohio and was later released. The dogs have also made a full recovery.
Frozen or iced-over lakes can be very dangerous, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) said after the region’s recent snowstorms and freezing temperatures.
“Even when ice looks stable, conditions can change quickly, and no ice is entirely without risk,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz in a news release.
Several factors, including moving water below the ice, warm winds, pressure cracks and more, can cause seemingly frozen bodies of water to crack and place a person in danger.
