MANILA, Ark. (KAIT) – A woman faces five counts of animal cruelty after police say she left five dogs to fend for themselves in her apartment.
Manila police arrested 29-year-old Candace Tamarra Wheeler on Wednesday, Jan. 15, after receiving a tip from a local animal cruelty shelter that she had abandoned five dogs at an apartment in the 300 block of Olympia Cove.
When Officer Ronald Amick arrived at the apartment, he spoke with Wheeler, who reportedly said she had been gone for a “week and a half or more and that she had been staying at her job in Monette.”
According to the initial incident report, Wheeler allowed Amick into the apartment to check on the dogs.
“Upon entry, I found the living conditions to be unfit for the animals,” Amick stated, adding that the five dogs appeared to be malnourished and unable “to get out of their feces.”
Amick took possession of the five dogs, which included two Yorkies, one labradoodle, a lab mix, and a standard poodle.
He also arrested Wheeler and took her to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office where she is being held in lieu of a $2,200 bond.
