Woman, 71, dies after a dog attack in Florence

FLORENCE – A 71-year old woman died after being attacked by a dog, Florence police said.

The woman was bicycling through a neighborhood near Brigadoone Lane during the evening of July 10. Brigadoone Lane is in a residential neighborhood in southern Florence.

As the woman was bicycling, a loose dog attacked her, according to a press release from the police department.

The dog knocked the woman from her bicycle and bit her, causing traumatic injuries. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Animal control officers have taken possession of the dog, police said.

The Florence Police Department and Florence County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

It’s the latest in a series of attacks that has led Florence City Council and Florence County Council members to beef up animal ordinances.

In January, a pack of eight dogs allegedly attacked a 14-month old child. She spent nearly five days in a coma as a result of her injuries.

The numbers of dog attacks in Florence County has risen slightly in recent years. There were nine calls for dangerous dogs in 2022 and 14 calls in 2023, according to Florence County Environmental Services Director Todd Floyd.

The city passed a more severe version of its dangerous animal ordinance in August 2023. City Council members said the ordinance was in response to concerns that aggressive dogs are roaming unchecked in city neighborhoods.

The ordinance lowered the threshold for an animal to be considered dangerous and increase penalties for violating the city’s rules.

The County Council also reworked its ordinance, creating different categories of dangerous animals, increasing the fines and the levels of liability insurance for certain categories of dangerous animal.

The ordinance passed in April.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
