GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Wisconsin Humane Society is in urgent need of adoptive dog parents.
Shelters all across the state are in a crisis, including those in Green Bay.
Nearly 400 dogs are currently being cared for across the organization, with more than 100 ready for their forever homes.
Some shelters are already at capacity.
To help incentivize potential adopters, adoption fees have been dramatically reduced.
All dogs over six months old are now just $75, while “benchwarmer” fees have been reduced to $25.
The term “benchwarmer” refers to dogs who have been in the shelter for a while now.
If you’re interested, but not sure if you’re ready to fully commit, staff we spoke with say you do have options.
“We even have our benchwarmer try-out program, so what that is, any of our benchwarmers, you sign up to be a foster parent, you take them home for a week, give them a week in your home, see if they work out, and if they work out, great. There’s an adoption process online. And if they don’t work out, take them back to the shelter and try out somebody else. The worst thing that could happen is we freed up the kennel for a week, and the dog got a nice, calm home for a while,” says Corey Viars, the media coordinator for the Wisconsin Humane Society Green Bay and Door County campuses.
As of right now, adoption fees will only be lowered for a week. After that, they’ll return to normal, unless the organization decides to extend it.
