Winter pet care tips from Animal Allies

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – Minnesota winters can be harsh and not just on humans.

As the Northland gets ready for colder temperatures, vets at Animal Allies say there are a few steps that can help keep your pets healthy and happy.

First, just like humans, stay up to date on your pet’s yearly checkups because the cold can make some medical conditions worse.

When it comes to having your pets outside in the snow, make sure to wipe down your pet when coming in from a walk and pay special attention to their paw pads.

Ice melt can be toxic to dogs and dampness can lead to dry skin.

It’s also important that you keep your pets warm.

Animal Allies’ Medical Manager Kelsey Pettit said a jacket and booties for your dog can be a good idea, but they’re not a must.

“Pets are just like us, so they’re going to have their own tolerance to the cold,” said Pettit. “Obviously a husky is going to have a higher tolerance to the cold than a short haired dog.“

As a general rule, you know your dog best.

If they seem to be cold or irritated, it might be time to come inside.

If you’re thinking of becoming a new pet owner this winter, keep in mind how busy the holidays can get.

Pets need time to acclimate and the holiday hustle and bustle can be challenging for them.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
