With so much sentiment and passion attached to the sport itself, host nations face the immense responsibility of ensuring their preparations are flawless. They go above and beyond to create an unforgettable experience, from world-class stadiums to seamless logistics, for the hundreds and thousands of people who will come to their country.
However, some countries take controversial measures for the sake of image and immense responsibility. In a shocking and brutal cleanup effort, Morocco is reportedly considering slaughtering three million stray dogs ahead of hosting the 2030 World Cup. This report has sparked outrage from many animal rights activists and organizations.
Reports claim that the cleanup effort is in line to make the country’s cities look nicer to soccer fans. Morocco will co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. The matches will happen across these three countries, meaning they will see a lot of tourist footfall. However, the venue for the finals has not yet been decided. The 2030 FIFA World Cup holds special significance as it marks the tournament’s 100th anniversary.
Morocco has already started its preparations, with upgrading the stadiums and transportation networks to meet FIFA standards. It is in this context, that several media sources have reported that Morocco might carry out a systemic culling of thousands of dogs.
According to the International Animal Coalition, the culling is “Morocco’s ugly secret”. On their official website, the organization claims, “300,000 street dogs are killed every year in Morocco. They are brutally killed by individuals working on behalf of the Government. However, ever since FIFA made its announcement that Morocco would co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal the inhumane and barbaric killing has increased.”
They also reported that the dogs are culled by injecting them with strychnine – a highly toxic, colorless, and bitter chemical used as a pesticide. The dogs are reportedly either shot on streets or transported to facilities where they are slaughtered.
While the Moroccan authorities claimed that the mindless slaughter stopped in 2024, reports claim that instead there has been a rise in such cases after FIFA, in 2023, announced that Morocco will host FIFA. Animal rights advocates are now reaching out to FIFA and calling for action against Morocco. FIFA is yet to release any statement regarding the controversy.
