The No. 1 license honors special dogs each year during the annual dog license sale, which ends on Jan. 31.
Sailor was the county’s No. 2 dog in 2023. Her owner is a longtime supporter of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Sailor earned the top dog tag at the Humane Society’s Pet Afflaire fundraiser in November. Keith donated the top three licenses to be part of the event’s auction, according to an auditor’s office press release.
The No. 2 honor went to Sophie, a 4-year-old Boxer also owned by Huber.
Santiago, a 7-year-old Coton de Tulear owned by Lourdes Maurice, won the No. 3 license at the auction. However, his owner requested the No. 007 license instead because she says he has a personality like James Bond. Santiago frequently travels the world with Maurice.
The county’s annual event is also a reminder for other dog owners to renew their licenses. The dog license fee is $20 for spayed or neutered dogs and $24 for dogs that have not been altered, according to the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office.
Dog licenses help owners reunite with lost pets because they can be used as a quick and accurate way of notifying the owner if a dog is found.
In 2024, the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center helped return more than 380 lost dogs to their owners. Revenue from license sales supports the Animal Resource Center, but it is also Ohio law that all dogs that are three months of age or older be licensed, according to the auditor’s office.
Dog licenses can be purchased in three ways:
- Online at www.mcohio.org/dogs
- By mailing-in an application, which can be downloaded at www.mcohio.org/dogs
- In-person at 16 stores and agencies throughout Montgomery County, as well as at the County Administration Building and the Animal Resource Center
