White Whiskers Senior Dog Sanctuary opens its senior dog sanctuary in Akron, helping provide a permanent home for older dogs.
AKRON, N.Y. — A senior dog sanctuary is officially open in Akron. White Whiskers Senior Dog Sanctuary cut the ribbon to mark its grand opening Saturday afternoon.
The celebration was filled with live music, raffle prizes, local adoptable dogs, food, and more.
White Whiskers started in 2020. Founder Polla Milligan said, “White Whiskers is the first senior dog sanctuary in Western New York.” Before the sanctuary found its permanent home in Akron, Milligan partnered with local shelters to find homes for senior dogs—placing more than 250 dogs in forever homes.
Since then, her focus has remained the same: helping older dogs find a comfortable and compassionate home.
Milligan says that after years of working with local shelters, they now have a permanent base of operations. She noted, “Even though it’s not officially the beginning, I think it’s the beginning of wonderfulness and all the things we can do. We have so many plans and so many ways that we can help.”
Money raised from Saturday’s ribbon-cutting will go back toward the shelter. We’re told “the fully operational sanctuary is home to 25 dogs, ranging from seven to 17 years old, receiving around-the-clock care from Milligan and White Whiskers’ volunteers.”
