While fishing on a lake, they find 38 lost hunting dogs struggling in the water and decide to save them

A peaceful day on the water often promises moments of tranquility, but for three fishermen at Grenada Lake, Mississippi, it turned into a tale of courage and compassion. Bob Gist and Brad Carlisle, along with their guide, found themselves facing an extraordinary challenge when they stumbled upon 38 stranded hunting dogs struggling to survive in the open water. What unfolded was a remarkable story of selflessness that continues to inspire.

A Serene Morning Turns Into a Call for Action

Grenada Lake, known as a paradise for black crappie enthusiasts, is where Bob, from Arkansas, and Brad, from Tennessee, had hoped to enjoy a quiet fishing day. Armed with their rods and accompanied by Jordan Chrestman, their local guide, they anticipated nothing more than swapping fishing tips and enjoying nature’s peace.

Instead, just a couple of kilometers from the shore, they spotted a bizarre and heartbreaking scene. A cluster of dogs—nearly four dozen—was swimming in different directions, their heads bobbing above the water as they fought against exhaustion.

“They looked disoriented, like they didn’t know where to turn,” Bob later shared. Most of the dogs wore radio collars and bright fur markings, clear signs that they were trained hunting dogs.

Racing Against Time to Save Lives

Without hesitation, the group sprang into action. Their boat, initially meant for hauling fish, became a lifeline for these desperate animals. One by one, they pulled the dogs onboard. As each dog scrambled for safety, it was clear how frightened and drained they were.

The boat, though not large, managed to accommodate 27 dogs during the first trip. Once the group was safely ashore, the team returned to rescue the remaining 11. In just under an hour, all 38 dogs were saved.

Jordan, who had never experienced anything like this in his years as a guide, later said, “It wasn’t about fishing anymore—it was about making sure these animals survived.”

How Did the Dogs End Up in the Water?

The mystery of the dogs’ plight became clearer once they were back on land. The animals were part of a traditional hunting practice called a “Fox Run,” where dogs are trained to track foxes. This time, however, the chase took an unexpected turn. A deer darted into the lake, and the dogs, driven by instinct, pursued it.

In the excitement, they lost sight of the shore and ended up stranded in the vast waters of Grenada Lake. Without boats, their owners were unable to rescue them. The gratitude of these owners was immense when they learned that their dogs had been saved by the fishermen.

A Heartwarming Act of Kindness

For Bob, Brad, and Jordan, the day wasn’t about fishing anymore—it was about stepping up when it mattered. “We didn’t count fish that day,” Bob said, reflecting on the experience. “We counted lives saved.”

Their actions were met with widespread admiration as the story spread. Social media buzzed with praise for their heroic efforts, and animal welfare organizations highlighted the rescue as a shining example of humanity’s ability to care for creatures in need.

Nature, Humanity, and the Unexpected

Grenada Lake, a haven for anglers, became the setting for a rescue mission that touched hearts far beyond Mississippi. The lake now symbolizes more than just fishing; it’s a place where three men turned an ordinary outing into a moment of extraordinary compassion.

Whether on water or land, stories like this remind us that acts of kindness—whether toward people or animals—are what truly make us human.
