WADDINGTON, New York (WWNY) – There’s a mystery in the St. Lawrence County village of Waddington where dogs have been suddenly getting sick.
Kelly Thayer let her two Pomeranians, Kyah and Hadleigh, play outside in their fenced-in yard in Waddington last week. It would be their last time enjoying the fresh air.
“Within the hour they were both showing signs of not being okay. Just the look on their face, they were looking at me like, ‘Mom, something’s not right.’ Then the next thing I know, there was bright orange vomit, one time from each of them, and then within minutes, they were lifeless,” said Thayer.
From happy and healthy to lifeless in just hours, it’s a fate that other dogs in Waddington have also experienced recently. Village Mayor Mike Zagrobelny says he’s aware of 6 instances where dogs have experienced bloody stools, vomiting and convulsions, leading some to death.
Village leaders are in contact with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and the state Department of Environmental Conservation regarding the matter. The mayor says sewer and water tests came back regular.
As for Thayer, she’s hoping to get a necropsy done through Cornell University to learn more.
“They were just full of life. They loved attention. They loved to sing along to songs. They were just happy-go-lucky Pomeranians. They were very well-loved in our family,”
If you live in the village of Waddington and your pet becomes suddenly ill, you’re encouraged to tell your veterinarian about recent sicknesses in the area.
The mayor encourages pet owners to also let him know if their animals suddenly get sick so he can help keep track of recent incidents.
