OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – The Ottawa County treasurer’s office has released its 2024 list for top dog names based on dog licenses sold, and Luna again leads the pack of most popular names.
The top 10 dog names were determined by the registered names listed on dog licenses purchased by county residents. Dog licenses have been required by Michigan law since 1919 for any dog older than four months, and proof of a rabies vaccine must be provided to purchase the license.
This year, Bella and Charlie inched up the list from third and fourth places into second and third. Daisy was bumped down from the second place spot to the eighth.
While 2024’s list features many of the same names as last year, several new names have also shot up in pup-ularity, including Max and Willow.
This year’s top 10 Ottawa County dog names are as follows:
- Luna
- Bella
- Charlie
- Bailey
- Lucy
- Max
- Cooper
- Daisy
- Willow
- Ruby
The top three dog breeds remain exactly the same, with Labrador Retriever in first, Golden Retriever in second and German Shepherd in third.
The top breeds for 2024 were:
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Goldendoodle
- Mixed Breed
- Australian Shepherd
- Chihuahua
- Shih Tzu
- Pit Bull
- Poodle
While the list is fun, Ottawa County also uses it as an opportunity to remind residents to license their dogs, both for community safety and to help keep track of lost pets.
According to the county, pets found by animal control wearing their licenses will be returned to their owners quickly for a “tail-wagging, slobbery reunion,” but unlicensed dogs could be brought to an animal shelter and could accrue redemption fees, boarding costs, fines and vet bills.
Pets who remain unidentified could be put up for adoption.
In Ottawa County, dog licenses can be purchased at any time, but are issued to expire the month of the licensed dog’s rabies vaccination. New licenses are available for either one or three years, and can be purchased through participating veterinarians, some units of government or online.
