Meet Axel! This adorable pup loves to take naps and completely sprawl out while he’s doing it. According to his mom Karen, he’s very consistent in his approach to napping. See Exhibits A and B.

The only thing that changed is which end of the couch he decided to use.
Axel’s legal name is Axelson Augustin Melton and, reportedly, he answers to the following: Axe, Axel, Assman, and Boo. Karen says, “Rotties have a tendency to ‘air it out’ while napping.” She adds, “He is relaxed and trusting when on his back.”
As it turns out, Karen’s exactly right!
The American Kennel Club explored the history of dogs sleeping on their backs. For their story- Why Does My Dog Sleep On Their Back?– they talked with AKC Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein. Dr. Klein echoes exactly what Karen suggests. He says, “It means they feel relaxed and mentally comfortable in your household.”
Karen does admit that Axel, even though he’s routinely in that ‘vulnerable’ position, is ‘acutely aware of what’s happening the house.’ But there’s no arguing that he looks completely out of it.
Axel is certainly the ‘poster dog’ for comfortable. Karen says he snores like ‘a grown man’ when he sleeps and they can even hear him from upstairs. But snoring isn’t the only bodily noise he makes. Occasionally, he rips a fart too. Hey, we’re humans. Who are we to judge?
