Veterinarians across Georgia are reporting a rise in cases of an unknown respiratory illness affecting dogs.
The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association has confirmed the illness, noting a significant increase in cases over the past few months. “I think because we just don’t know exactly what it is and because if we cultured and took a swab of one dog that’s not necessarily what it’s gonna be for every dog,” said Mary Frances Wylie, a veterinarian at Northside Wesleyan Animal Hospital, to reporters.
What are the symptoms of this respiratory illness affecting dogs in GA?
Her clinic alone has treated approximately 15 dogs exhibiting symptoms such as a whooping cough and unusually low energy levels.
The illness is proving difficult to track due to its unidentified nature and resistance to standard treatments, often requiring multiple rounds of medication.
The airborne nature of the illness makes complete avoidance difficult. Contact your local veterinarian if your pet starts showing symptoms.
