Dog rescued after falling 100 feet into canyon at Colorado National Monument
A dog fell 100 feet at Colorado National Monument. Mesa County Search and Rescue saved her and she only suffered minor injuries.
A pup got carried away and “found herself in a ruff situation” while visiting the Colorado National Monument when she leapt 100 feet off the ledge into a canyon.
Yogi, a border collie, was visiting the Colorado National Monument, about half an hour from Grand Junction, with her owner Monday when she leapt out of the vehicle in excitement as they stopped to take in the view and “dashed towards the ledge,” Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook.
“Unfortunately, she didn’t understand the concept of the canyon and found herself falling over 100 feet off the edge before landing on a shelf,” the sheriff’s office said.
Fortunately for her, a deputy officer was close by and “responded with a dog catching pole.”
However, given the 100-plus-foot drop, the pole wasn’t sufficient, and the Mesa County Search and Rescue’s ropes team had to be called in “to rescue the scared pup.”
Video footage shared by the sheriff’s office shows rescue officials hoisting into the canyon with ropes and rescuing the approximately 40-pound pup.
Mesa County Search and Rescue Secretary Nallely Bean told USA TODAY Thursday the non-profit agency received the initial call for rescuers around noon Monday, and the pup was safely reunited with her owner about two hours later.
“Despite her long fall, the dog was up and walking once her rescuers got her over the ledge,” the agency said, adding “her owner was extremely grateful” and rushed her to an emergency vet.
Mesa County Search and Rescue said Yogi “only suffered minor scrapes and bumps, with no broken bones or internal injuries.”
“If dogs have nine lives like cats, she definitely used one in her adventure on the Monument,” MCSO said.
