The “Waste Not, Wag a Lot” program was launched at Bowling Green State University’s Thanksgiving celebration. It diverts food waste from the landfill and makes dog treats for the Wood County Dog Shelter.
Employees at the Social House, a BGSU dining hall, have a separate bin to put food scraps. Sustainability interns ensure the food is nontoxic to dogs, then they are baked into treats.
“We have about six to eight recipes,” said Job Zachrich, the Director of Communications for BGSU Dining. “And they’ve all been tested with vet support and culinary testing of other dogs.”
The first batch of treats was made using a week’s worth of cucumbers and carrots from the salad bar at the Social House.
Jodi Harding, the chief dog warden at the Wood County Dog Shelter, said the pups gobbled up the entire first batch in just a few days.
“Giving them something made from a person that is healthy is going to enrich them while they’re in their kennels,” said Harding. “It’s fantastic to have.”
