WASHINGTON COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A man is facing assault as well as animal cruelty charges surrounding what deputies say was the discovery of over a dozen dead hunting dogs.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says that around 10 a.m. on December 18th, deputies went to a home on Highway 32 South for a domestic assault.
While they were there, deputies learned there was potential animal abuse taking place as well.
Deputies say that Ryan Peele was arrested for assault on a female.
The sheriff’s office and animal control returned to the home and found 19 dead walker hunting hound dogs in varying stages of decomposition.
We’re told that 2 dogs were alive but were in rough shape and needed to be taken by animal control.
The dogs ranged in age from 6 months to 3 years old and appeared to have died from a lack of food and/or water.
Peele was charged with 19 counts of felony animal cruelty and will be charged with 2 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty for the 2 dogs that were found alive.
Peele was given a $19,000 secured bond.
