EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The Warrick Humane Society is trying something new, hoping to get pets into good homes, even temporarily.
Leaders at the Warrick Humane Society say it’s important to get a dog outside of the building as often as they can, and that’s how they came up with their idea for the summer sleepover.
Dogs at the Warrick Humane Society are calling on you to take them home, even if it’s just for a week. Now you have that chance, with the “summer sleepover.”
“From the 12th through the 19th, you are welcome to come pick up a dog and take it to your house for a week,” said WCHS assistant director, Jodie Holder.
The summer sleepover is a chance for families to try out owning one of these dogs, and hopefully fall in love. If not, Holder says it’s always good for the dogs to get a break from being in the shelter.
“It decompresses them from a lot of stress,” said Holder. “It gives them attention when they’ve been lonely and craving it. It does a lot for them, it helps them remember what it was like to be in a home.”
If it’s not working out, Holder says you can always bring the dog back sooner, but the hope is to match dogs with families and find them a forever home.
“We are offering 50% off of the adoption if you pick somebody that’s been here longer than 60 days,” Holder said.
Holder says some dogs have spent months at the shelter.
Leaders say if you adopt a dog, it allows them to take in another. That’s huge, as they’re operating with limited space.
“We could be potentially saving an additional 400 animals a year if we had the room to hold it,” said Holder.
That’s why WHS is hoping to get into a new building soon, and things like donations, or adopting dogs after a summer sleepover will help them get there.
If you’re interested in taking part in the summer sleepover program, you can sign up on the Warrick Humane Society website. That’s linked HERE. Dogs can be picked up through Thursday, and dropped back off on June 19.
