EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – Half a dozen service dogs got some hands-on training at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport this morning.
Volunteers from Can Do Canines held a mock security training session. They’re an organization based in the Twin Cities that provides service dogs for people with disabilities for free.
Friday’s training was a complete run through of what a person with a service dog may experience at an airport. This includes getting screened through TSA, boarding a plane and waiting at baggage claim. The goal is to prepare the canines for an actual ride.
“It’s really good because a lot of our clients, just like a lot of us, travel so if the dogs kind of knows what to expect in a plane and in an airport, they are not going to be as afraid or unsure when they do actually travel with their client,” said Volunteer Leader Erin Whitfield.
This is the third year Can Do Canines has held training at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport. Whitfield said the smaller setting helps the dogs prepare for larger airports such as MSP.
