HOUSTON, Texas (KPRC/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – A group of volunteers worked together to rescue a destitute dog that had been discarded in a dumpster behind a stretch of abandoned buildings.
A group of neighbors contacted a local animal rescue organization after they found a dog huddled in the corner of a dumpster on Saturday night. One of the people who found the young dog recorded the discovery.
“Do you think he’s injured?” they can be heard asking in the video.
The dog was not quick to move when help arrived, and remained prone in the corner of the dumpster until Fur a Pawsitive Future arrived, a local animal welfare group.
“I absolutely think someone came up and dropped him in,” said Diana Morelany from Berg Forster Life, another local animal rescue. “I can’t see the dog having gone in there on his own.”
“Unfortunately, putting a dog in a dumpster is obviously one of the less ideal places to dump a dog, but people do very bizarre things sometimes,” she continued.
Morelany joined the volunteers from Fur a Pawsitive Future in removing the dog from the dumpster and bringing him into the shelter where he could receive a medical examination and fill up on food and water.
“It was late night,” said Dr. Shireen Hyrapiet from Fur a Pawsitive Future about the discovery of the dog. “I think [the finders] opened the dumpster and all they saw were eyes shining back at them.”
The people who first found the dog attempted to get it to stand but it seemed unwilling to move until volunteers arrived with a crate. The dog stood up and walked into the crate on its own.
“It definitely seemed like it might have been comfortable in a crate,” Morelany said. “It had probably been in one before.”
The dog was taken in by the shelter and is reportedly now safe and sound.
The rescue groups and police are searching for whoever dumped the dog in the first place.
