WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) – A Williamson County man is recovering after a vicious dog attack two weeks ago.
He is now speaking out about the attack and the moment things took a terrifying turn.
Darrell Miller said he is thankful to be alive after an attack by his family’s dogs.
Miller lives in rural Goreville with his sister and niece.
He told me he is not sure why the dogs were in an aggressive state.
“I went outside and got on my phone and called my sister and let her know, man, these dogs are going crazy and I don’t know why.”
That is when he says the situation took a turn for the worse.
“There were two dogs that mauled me. When they got out of the cage, one ran and grabbed this arm, and one ran and grabbed this arm,” he explained.
Miller said he was trying to get to the neighbors for help.
“I’m screaming at the top of my lungs. I’m screaming for help. No one heard me.”
He eventually made it to the neighbors who then called 911.
Miller said he has bite wounds over his entire body, but the most severe injuries are to his left arm.
“Under the bandage, I have exposed muscles from where he chewed to the bone,” he said.
Miller was airlifted to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana.
He said he only had one thing on his mind during the flight over.
“I have to survive this. I have to.”
Miller was released from the hospital on February 27. He is continuing to receive treatment locally.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies have finished their investigation with no charges filed.
The two dogs that attacked Miller are still with Williamson County Animal Control.
A GoFundMe has been created to help with his expenses.
