ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) – The first heat wave of the season was forecasted to be on the horizon.
Dog owners in Rocky Hill were mindful of the weather and worked to keep their four-legged friends cool.
Tosh was among the dogs that took a bath to stay cool on Tuesday.
“We come every day, usually in the morning,” said Georg Breault, Rocky Hill.
A posse of six dogs and their owners opted to come a little earlier to the Rocky Hill Dog Park this week.
“We’re here earlier because of the heat,” Breault said. “8 a.m. or earlier to do their walks and then we’re going to go home and sit in the AC the rest of the day.”
Experts agreed that that was a good idea.
Dr. Chip Beckett, senior veterinarian at Becket Associates Vet Services, said cranking up the air conditioning will keep pets cool.
“If your dog favors the outdoors, make sure they find a shady spot and don’t spend too much time walking on the concrete,” Beckett said.
He said most importantly, make sure a pet has plenty of water.
“Dogs tend to pant a lot, so they need plenty of water,” Beckett said.
Pet owners may remember to give their dogs water, but some may forget one tip.
“Certainly, don’t leave them in the car,” Breault said.
Beckett said that if a dog is suffering from a heat-related illness, owners may see some signs.
He told them to be on the lookout for dry mouth, panting, red gums and tongue, and has a change in character.
