VANCOUVER Wash. (KPTV) – A man was shot and killed by Vancouver police on Saturday afternoon near the waterfront, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
Shortly before 2 p.m., police said they responded to Southeast Columbia Way after reports of a man with an “aggressive German Shepherd” that was running lose and “had bitten at least one person” on the trail near the river.
At about 3 p.m., police said they found the man and his dog near Columbia Street and Columbia Way. Officers said they “observed the dog attempt to bite a person.”

Police said they approached the man, and as they did so, he “displayed what appeared to be a firearm, and pointed it at one of the officers.”
One of the officers shot the man, who died at the scene. Police said they tried to give him emergency medical aid.
The dog “remained aggressive” toward officers and emergency medical responders, so police said they tied the dog to a dumpster to stop it from biting anyone. It was then taken to the Humane Society.
No police officers were hurt. One person told dispatch that they were seeking medical treatment for bite wounds from the German Shepard.
Police said that video captured by body-worn cameras and in-car cameras “will be reviewed and released at a later time,” and the two Vancouver Police Officers are now on critical incident leave.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
