LANSING, MI — Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office announced a plea deal has been reached in connection with the 2021 murder of a Mason County man. Hope Snyder, 43, of Kincheloe pleaded no contest to one count of second degree murder, one count of first degree arson, and two counts of second degree animals – killing/torturing.
“This plea agreement ensures Ms. Snyder will face significant consequences for her unconscionable crimes,” Nessel said. “I commend the diligent efforts of Michigan State Police and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, who worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victim, his family, and his beloved pets.”
As part of the plea, a sentencing agreement was reached that will place Snyder in the Michigan Department of Corrections for 35 to 60 years.
Snyder was accused of setting the victim’s house on fire while he was asleep in his home with his two dogs. Text and Facebook messages revealed the two got into an argument earlier in the night. Other messages recovered during the investigation revealed that Snyder told friends about her plan to steal the victim’s truck and money and burn down his house.
After she set fire to the victim’s house, Snyder stole his truck and drove across the state before she was arrested at Detroit Metro Airport. The man and his dogs were killed in the fire.
Snyder is scheduled to be sentenced in 51st Circuit Court on Aug. 27.
