AUSTIN, Texas — Two dogs were rescued from a storm drain Friday, requiring a coordinated effort between animal control officers and city watershed officials.
The Austin Animal Center received a call about the stranded dogs and dispatched Animal Protection Officers to the scene. Upon arrival, officers were unable to locate an entry point large enough for the dogs to have entered the drain system in the immediate area.

Working with Austin Watershed personnel, officials consulted drainage system maps and determined the dogs had likely traveled a significant distance through the underground network. The nearest possible entry point was discovered to be in an open field far from where the animals were found.
“These two must have traveled deep through the drain system together before finally being spotted,” the Austin Animal Center said in a social media post.
Both dogs were successfully extracted from the drain and are now in the care of the Austin Animal Center. The dogs were not microchipped, and shelter staff have not been able to find any information about their owners.
Officials credited the rescue’s success to quick collaboration between city departments and an alert citizen who reported the trapped animals.
